Robert Johnson lay in bed with his eyes open and listened to the weathered coffee pot whistling in pain from the hot liquid brewing inside. The kitchen was only a few feet away from the bedroom so it was easy for Robert to hear the coffee brew. The local disc jockey’s voice infiltrated the home through an old Casio boom box, “It’s going to be a scorcher! 102 degree high for today with temperatures expected to get higher later in the week.” said the over enthusiastic disc jockey. It was Tuesday and Robert was going through his morning routine. His wife and daughter were on a “mom-daughter” vacation, so they were enjoying their time together and he was home alone. The routine started with him picking up the newspaper that was delivered on his front porch, drinking his coffee and thinking of the things he wanted to accomplish throughout the day.

The house phone rang and Robert picked it up after the third ring. “Hello,” he said with a groggy morning voice. “Oh, hey Joe. How’s it going?” Robert had a confused look on his face; he then took a sip from his coffee mug that read World’s Greatest ATM! in bold black letters (It was a gift from his daughter). Joe’s voice echoed through the telephone speaker.

“It’s going pretty good!” I was just calling to let you know I learned GPI introduced that new mechanical fuel meter, the MR 5-30. I actually have some in stock. I understand you were looking for a replacement to your red, mechanical meter that is on your fuel set-up. “I just wanted to give you a heads up.” said a matter-of-fact Joe.

“Are you serious? Can you tell me a little more about it?” asked Robert. “I do need to replace my red, mechanical fuel meter because it is starting to leak and it isn’t counting like it used to.”

Joe replied, “Yeah, I’ve been hearing that lately.” I know that the MR 5-30 will work with your current fuel transfer pump because it has a flow range of five to thirty gallons per minute (5-30 GPM). It is made of aluminum so works well with the gasoline and diesel fuel that you pump. This meter also works with kerosene.

Robert took another sip of his hot black coffee and then said, “Well Joe this MR 5-30 meter from GPI sounds like it would be a great replacement meter for my leaky, red one. I barely got 200 hours of use out of it. I’m sure the GPI meter can give me better usage minus all the headaches my old one gave me.”

“Rob, I can tell you that the MR 5-30 has two times the life when compared to the industry standard, so 200 hours of life is not a problem,” replied Joe.

“Joe, I have to go into town today for a part that I need for my truck so I will swing by and see if I can take one of those meters off your hands. In the meantime, can you send me any other information you have to my e-mail? I need to look at some of the specifications to make sure it will work with my set-up.” said a now fully awake Robert.
“Sure, Rob! I will send you a couple of links so that you can take your time reading about the meter. I will also send you a link to a video that shows you the meter in action.” said an enthusiastic Joe.

“Well that sounds like a plan Joe. I will see you this afternoon then.” said Robert as he hung up the phone.

Fuel transfer pumps come in all kinds of brands, sizes, pump construction and deliver fuel at different flow rates. Fuel transfer pumps are usually sold with either a manual or automatic nozzle. In some instances, they are sold as a “pump only” unit. One of the most important features in fuel transfer pumps is the type of motor protection. Motor protection can be temperature or circuit breaker protection. In this post we will describe a motor temperature limiting protected fuel transfer pump and a circuit protected fuel transfer pump. Understanding the difference can help you choose the best fuel transfer pump for your application.

Circuit Protected Fuel Transfer Pumps

M-150S-AU:Circuit Breaker Protected Fuel Transfer Pump

The Basics:
A circuit protected motor can be built in different ways but essentially all of these circuit protected motors do the same thing, protect motor against damage because of excessive current draw.

The Way it Works:
If the motor draws more amps than what it was designed for, the circuit breaker automatically trips. The GPI fuel transfer pump model M-150 and M-180 pumps will shut off and remain off until the problem can be diagnosed. Debris in the pump or a clogged strainer may be the problem. The circuit breaker must be reset manually by turning the switch off, letting the pump cool and then turning the switch on again.

Motor Temperature Limiting Protected Fuel Transfer Pumps

The Basics:
A motor temperature limiting protected motor works off of temperature.

The Way it Works:
If the heat of the motor becomes excessive, an auxiliary temperature-limiting device will trip. The GPI EZ-8 Fuel Transfer Pump has this type of mechanism. This device resets automatically after the motor has cooled.
